Beauty queens and tiaras...

Many of you know that yesterday we were dragged to the Miss World Malta - sometimes you've got to do it to please your dear ones. Anyway, some dared to call it the event of the year. And let's say we sort of looked forward to that.

Well, we did go. And well, we were rather let down - and that's being kind.
Let's say it was our mistake, as we should have bought the VIP tickets. But you know how these things work; you only regret not looking into it until you actually get there and you realise that there aren't enough chairs for the people attending. How ridiculous is that?

Oh yes, because that was one of the many problems. We wrote it on Facebook - like Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando would've done - and some people who know nothing of standards, of course, wrote back saying that that's the best show indeed when it comes to beauty pageants.

Really? And why should we give a rat's ass about that? Why are these islands plagued with the "come on, it wasn't bad, actually it was the best beauty show of the year" mentality? How on earth do these people expect standards to improve if the people are content with the not-extremely-mediocre?

Seating wasn't the only problem. The show then kicked off and hey, what a show! The people not in the VIP area could barely see anything - you could see the elder ladies trying to stretch up to get to see something... Why? They had hanging TVs on the sides for the unfortunate ones at the back. That's good enough. Well, not. The TVs were only showing ads of those jewellery companies that sponsored the show. Thankfully, it then occurred to them that showing the audience what was actually happening on that blessed catwalk was perhaps a better idea than the ads.

Enough with the organisation of it all though.
We then had the contestants... what incredible contestants.

We were under a perverse impression that we were at a beauty pageant. At times that really seemed not to be the case.

Some of them did manage to hide the flaws when wearing those evening gowns. But then came the moment they had to bear it all in a bikini... And hey, there the flaws reverberated with the awe of the public.

OK, OK, not to that extent. Yet, seeing them competing, aiming at taking that tiara back home, one cannot not say "what the heck?" It's not that they were flabby, really. It was the whole 'package' (to use a term pertaining to another event) that was wrong. The walk, the facial expressions and, wait for it, the 'hamallagni' (sorry guys, Maltese renders the idea better there) merely highlights that some people are terribly deluded.

The best bit for freaks like ourselves was when the host, Keith Demicoli - yes, the journalist - asked a question to the 7 finalists in English. Oh, this bit was hilarious. This was done to test the fluency of the contestants, because when they go abroad they must speak good English, Keith told us. Fine. Indeed they must ...also because they would have a similar interview:

Hopefully this year the winner won't think that her cooking sushi could help the ones hit by the Tsunami.

Anyhow, guess what. Oh yes, good guess. They could barely string a sentence together, bar 2 of them. You'd say that their beauty will compensate - but when that's also missing, what do we do?

In any case, this is this year's Miss World Malta:

Miss World Malta, with Sue Rossi on her right and Claudia Calleja on the left
Stephanie Portelli, first runner up
Alison Galea Valleta, second runner up
All we can say is that the audience seemed to be sorely disappointed. We were, too. We believe others deserved the title more. Alas, that's how beauty pageants work - your faces never win.

  1. I was there and I think that one placing second is much more good-looking! The winner was too put up.

    1. I don't want to be mean but I think the winner is very average. I don't think she deserved to place first because there were others who were logically more beautiful. And no don't feed me the beauty is in the eye of the beholder crap. The winners are based on a set of criteria abroad and having someone so plain just will not do.

    2. I totally agree. The one placing third looks natural and seems to have a beautiful smile.

  2. You daresay this wasn't a good show? It was a beautiful show and the winners have been well chosen and the setup was the best in years. We must thank the organizers who did a brilliant job and that in reality we must admit that fashion is really improving in Malta.

    1. Oh Val, if you are who I think you are, then AHAHAHAHA. No, wait, AHAHAHAHA! Of course you'd say that. And if you aren't who I think you are then, AHAHAHAHA you are one of those who know nothing of standards.

    2. Not well organised in my opinion.. the seating was a joke.. I could not see anything on stage! Next time choose a different venue or stage set up!

Just wondering how diluted they were that's all? Was it an open bar event?

    1. In reality what we meant to write was 'deluded', but the Mac's auto spellcheck changed it because while typing away we put a letter instead of another and it was changed to the closest word there was. Thanks for pointing that out, though.

  5. You're right. It appalling because I had to stand for the whole time. The security people told me that it was my fault because I was late but well in reality there was a lot of traffic because floriana was all blocked. I was so angry that I only stayed because my friend was taking part.

  6. I think you are being too cruel. The show was good on the whole? Think of the effort put in to set the show up?

Why do you bother with maltese shows? I used to but I then gave up because i always end up comparing them with real professional shows and I feel very down then.

  10. you really make me laugh guys .....its easier to hide yourself behind a blog playing it mr / miss knows it all, this and that bla bla bla come on get over it . i dare you people to even try put up a show . easier said than done . especially when all you do is write and gossip about people.

no offence but if they are up to criticism so are you guys

    peace

  11. Oh do we? We're glad we do. We weren't really aiming at becoming clowns, but hey, why not?

Coincidentally, you also made us laugh. It's funny that you say we hide ourselves behind a blog when our names are out there, whereas you send comments in hiding behind your very comfortable anonymous nick...

Besides, it's exceptionally annoying when people give us the "I dare you people to even try put up a show" crap. For many reasons, which in short would be: 1. we're terrible perfectionists so we'd kill ourselves to have everything done as it should've been done; 2. Why should be happy with stuff that in reality could be better? Until do away with this "oh well, it's good enough, it'll do" attitude, we won't improve. NO, when things are not as good as they should, then we should aim for higher.

And, indeed, we are here to be criticised - no one said we don't want that. So much so that we have never ever censored a comment - the comment in which we're called "l**a" sort of proves it.

ps. It's meant to be "it's easier", not "its easier"...

  12. I am not a follower of this Beauty Event. All I can say from the few I see on the social networks and from what people say is that for the past 5 years the contestants are getting more and more worst. The only thing that is always getting better is the fee and the money that Mrs and Mrs Rossi and the I forgot Claudias ( Miss Piggy ) because recently she had changes in surnames. It is all about money and friends and who made the courses at MM.Sometimes luck turns against Sue because heq judges are who they are. Another thing I always notices is the events held before the contest were the organisers visit for a few minutes and then they flee to meet there lovers and leave the contestants alone with the sponsors alone in the venue and event party or whatever. The inevitable is , during the final night you see for example Diane winning the title of Miss Magna tal Hjata and happens that two weeks before the owner of the sponsor you can see him driving her out from the event lol hahahahah...and by the way ...sometimes one should take account of the winner's father's income...last year and this year winners are no exception, it is well known that one of them acting like blonde saying that her father pays so I win...Xtistenna wara li ma naqawx ghan nejj meta imorru barra. At the end next year we will have again MISS WORLD MALTA or Miss Malta since poor dejee and jow died, and since Sue hated them so much she might get back the title of Miss Malta lol and she will make a balla liri and produce a crap and junk and cheap of an event..it is all about money, sex and cocaine

    1. While agreeing on many things you said here, I stand to correct you that the Title of Miss Evening Dress (or magna tal-hjata, as you mentioned) was not won by the model named Diane (who was wearing a very nice blue dress to be fair, and was actually my favourite model), but a model called Shanice or Janice won the title. She was wearing a purple dress whom i sincerely did not like a all. I agree with you that she didn't deserve the title. In my humble opinion, the model called Diane (again if I'm not mistaken the one in the blue dress, the one which won Miss Spinning Jewelry) would have definitely deserved to win not only Miss Evening Dress, but for me she was much more good looking than the model winning the title of Miss World Malta !!

  13. I remember one event were the contestants attended a party and they had to stay in the VIP area promoting Heiniken. I was sure that Sue and Cludia SKiffer apart they never showed up and left the girls all ages all exposed alone they even got payed to provide them there. The girls never got anything in return because they gave and give them the false impression that it will help getting points hahahahah ( brave Sue ir Rossa ) she thinks everyone is stupid ta. So she does the same when she send her contestants like she did in the past , send them to fairs with flyers of a sponsor lke 201 jewlers and she never pays them and tell them these are all credits...so some of these events are with the owners and managers of the sponsors and one should be there to feast his eyes seeing some of these stupid , mindless and useless girls ( As if Models ) go and get laid with some old disgusting and worthless individuals simply to get a sponsored again trophy Miss Give and Take lol..Let put it this way, if you are in the states and if you sleep with one of these men you will get a good role in Hollywood like many do up there I say what is in a Fuck mhux hekk...but to do it here for nothing is a big shame on the organizers...but at the end comes the truth..the famous Maltese Venerabile Venerissimo Venepulcinello and Veneserjissimo come and Venekontra all beauty contests when on tv is with the other Venegaffetto and start buffering and Venestupidirlo because he organize and say he is against contest...to get to the point then he Venerera Sue Rosso Songue with an Award lol ...In other words this in Malta and not Paris or Milan or NY and things are what they are and no matter how much we do the truth is truth..the only way to make it hit is u go abraod and think act behave work and expose and pose and wiggle like professionals do and not take part in Miss WiWiPiPi Cococo Malta and Gaffetta and Venerissiimo Bullshit

    1. It would be better, for example, if people like you, who seem to be annoyed with others lambasting what is not essentially the créme de la créme of shows, started posting comments using their real names? Why are many so terribly afraid of showing their names? Your expertise might turn in handy, you never know :)

  17. Dear CD, it’s not that we want to be exceptionally mean, but your comment is, yes, beyond pathetic. We doubt we know you - as a matter of fact, we try to steer clear of such ridiculous prats - so you probably don’t know how we look, which is how we’d prefer things to remain (in simple English: we don’t look forward to meeting you, ever!)

However, whether we’ve a pretty face or not is really beside the point. Your thinking that is in actual fact indicative of the kind of upbringing you’ve had and what sort of mindset you’ve been lumped with. Yes, because in order to express a genuine opinion one must not be in the competition himself - we know that deep down you probably can grasp this fact; but in the sheer ignorance you demonstrate in leaving such a comment, your common-sense seems to be rather limited, so we shall explain further. If you go to a restaurant, for instance, and you are served a dish which was poorly cooked, we shall assume that you will realise the food isn’t exactly sumptuous, even if your not a chef by profession. Now, do you see some parallels there? (Probably in your agitation to reply with a nasty comment you won’t fully comprehend that, but at least we did try to make matters easy for you.)

While we discourage you from following our blog in the future, we secretly hope you will insist on doing so while hiding in your dark corner. Why do we say this? That’s easy: your disgustingly appalling English (mainly the consecution temporum and heinous spelling mistakes [the dictionary will help you understand these terms]) needs to improve. Here you might learn the difference between: “right” and “write”, “pretend and “expect” and, indeed, much more.

Meanwhile, do please keep your ignorance growing.

ps. We are sorry if the comment is a bit beyond your capabilities. Unfortunately, your English we speak not.

It is amazing see such individuals comment about beauty and ignore absolutely other comments above that show that these events are close to frauds , money and directly indicate and show facts to be investigated seriously and still some of you choose to focus on the winners face..it is very simple Daniela knew she was going to win from the very beginning, you should have heard her mates in Rome with the Cesare's and one or two know what I am referring about. In other countries it is a dishonor if a contestant in the past took part in a contest of such scale and wins a title like miss photogenic and after three years take part again in the same contest. In other words the winner risked to loose badly her face if she loosed ranks but she knew and she was known that she will make it up higher especial with the low , pathetic lack of quality of this year's Contestants..And the worst thing is the organizers if they are serious enough which I always doubted , they should have never leave anyone who took part in the past take part again. They should scout and search AS ACTUALY THEY SAY ( SEARCH FOR MWM LOL) and not recycle the same girls again and again..For me the only search is for cash money and sponsors...also the venue this year shows how low things are becoming and I am not impressed that this year they also one of the stars org they get an award for achievement in fashion from the fashion guru. Basta we go an criticism gaffiero and then we hail some one the same like him or even worst. At least he is genuine and a good person..

    1. I couldn't agree more with you there. The accusations made by ppl who definitelt know the 'behind the scenes' so well need serious investigations. and i couldn't agree more that this years Miss Malta looks like a recycled 90's looking beauty queen. I heard that she has a very good personal trainer following her. Well lets face it she needs a face change and teeth change she looks nothing like a beauty queen. and the competition as you very well pointed out was poor. It was iether her or xeba hamalli especially that Cherice that won best dressed... yeah a UV purple dress, apperently unfinished as it had more holes that my mums pasta strainer...whith erm trimmings of guess what ....... NEON oragne satin. :-/

  19. Well lets put it this way. If you are in China where English is spoken fluently by the majority of the contestants and the only way you can reply well is in english that leaves you with little to say about ' Talking perfect English is not going to win her the contest neither'. Apart from that i would love to see a mute contestant who is really pretty, (cos ours is not even half pretty especially when she laughs with her crooked front teeth) take part and do well, Miss world has to talk and talk well, with sense, Otherwise it would be called modeling, Where girls just wear a dress and walk down the catwalk. Kapix Mr.anonymous?
